Love Pursued Across Eternity: PART 2/3

The Price of Pursuit

In our recent sermon series, "Love Pursued Across Eternity," we explored the profound depths of God's love for humanity, culminating in the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ. This week, we delved into the "Price of Pursuit," highlighting three significant aspects of the love that Jesus demonstrated through His actions.

1. Stepping Down from Glory

The first point we discussed was how Jesus stepped down from glory. This concept is not just a theological statement; it is a powerful reminder of the humility that love requires. Jesus, the Word made flesh, chose to leave the comforts of heaven to dwell among us (John 1:14). He didn’t wait for us to ascend to Him; instead, He descended into our world, embodying love in its purest form. This act of humility is a testament to the nature of true love—it moves downward before it can lift others upward. Jesus didn’t just visit creation; He became a part of it, showing us that love is about closeness and understanding, not distance and superiority.

2. Carrying Our Shame

The second point emphasized the weight of shame that Jesus carried on our behalf. In the first century, crucifixion was the most degrading form of execution, reserved for the worst of criminals. Yet, Jesus chose this path, embracing the shame that came with it (Isaiah 53:3). He bore not only the physical pain but also the emotional and spiritual weight of our sins. The beauty of the cross lies in the fact that Jesus willingly took on our shame so that we could walk away clean. He didn’t ignore our shame; He faced it head-on, disarming it with His love. This act of love was not just about suffering; it was about redemption and restoration.

3. Giving Everything to Win Us

Finally, we explored how Jesus gave everything to win us. His sacrifice on the cross was not merely a transaction; it was a proposal of love. In ancient Jewish customs, a groom would offer a bride price to honor the value of his beloved. Jesus paid the highest bride price—not in silver or gold, but with His own blood (Galatians 2:20). This act was a declaration of His commitment to us, sealing a covenant that signifies our worth in His eyes. The cross was not just a display of moral superiority; it was an outpouring of passionate, covenantal love.

As we reflect on these points, it’s essential to understand that the price of pursuit was high, but Jesus paid it because we are worth it to Him. We are not just tolerated; we are wildly wanted and desired by God. The love of Christ is not a distant concept; it is a personal invitation to experience His grace and mercy.

Let us remember that the story does not end in death. As we approach Resurrection Sunday, we celebrate the fact that our Bridegroom is not in a grave; He is risen! This love story continues, and we are invited to be a part of it!
